Drunk drivers

One thing never goes with driving and that is drinking. Most of the road accidents taking place are a by-product of drunk driving. The number of such incidents is increasing day by day, worldwide. Since 2015 almost a 7% increase in such accidents was seen in 2016. Although the literacy rates have gone way too higher for almost every country, surprisingly the drinking associated accidents have increased a lot. This alarming situation needs more attention & should be discussed on higher platforms as well. Even the best driving schools of every city can address this issue and theoretically, it can help a lot.

The limit of alcohol in the body:

It cannot be stated that this amount or that amount in the body is not allowed when drinking. This is because it depends on the height, age, weight, gender, and several other factors. Even the anxiety disorders, eating what kind of food and amount of drinking play key roles. However, the law states that in 100ml of urine, the quantity allowed in 107mg. In 100ml of breath, 35µ of alcohol is allowed. In the blood test, it should not be more than 80mg.

The testing procedures:

If you’re a suspect, police can perform one of the three tests assigned to them for such cases. Most of the times, the police is more likely to follow a breath test.

When a person drinks alcohol, it goes to the whole body via stomach, intestine, blood & to the brain by crossing the blood-brain barrier. A person’s lungs are enriched with arteries, & when alcohol is in the blood, it automatically becomes a part of the breath. In a breath test, the amount of alcohol is obtained by the exhaling phenomenon. It is also called Blood Alcohol Count (BAC). The blood alcohol amount should not be more than the specified amount.

The testing of suspected drunk drivers is of two types i.e. Electronic & Manual. In developed countries, electronic checking is a popular way whereas in developing countries, the manual method is commonly used for suspects. In electronic testers, the person has to blow; the reader shows the result in numeric figures. In the case of manual testers, the person blows a balloon and the associated tube shows the amount of the alcohol present in the breath.

The limit specified is 35 micrograms in 100ml of breath or 0.08%. For further confirmation, urine & blood tests might be conducted.

The Penalties:

Some countries have strict rules, others have some relaxation. Some countries impose a lifetime on the drunk drivers, others charge heavily and might imprison for several months. In the UK, one-year driving ban with a fine of up to £2500 & imprisonment of 3-6 months is the penalty by the government on drunken driving cases. If the person isn’t willing to give a specimen to test, he may be subjected to all or one of the above-suggested punishments. In case of murdering someone due to drunken driving, 14 years of imprisonment along with fine, license cancellation & ban on driving for two years can be suggested by the court.

The advice:

The advice can be nothing except there is no need to take the risk as drunk driving can lead to imprisonment. There are various other ways to live your life meaningfully. If you’re ever drunk but in need to travel, book a car or use any other public transport. This can diminish so many risks. Various researches show drinking affects badly driving ability. Putting your own life in danger is one thing, putting other people lives in danger is a crime.
